Azores Islands
The butterflies of the Azores are well studied and include some endemic species found only on these islands. There are a few publications on butterflies of the Azores. In 1999, a guide to the moths of the Azores was published, which includes 32 species. In 2005, a list of the terrestrial fauna and flora of the Azores was published, which includes nearly a hundred species of Lepidoptera. In 2009, biologist Virgílio Vieira published a small guide to butterflies of the Azores, which includes 17 species of butterflies and moths (Papilionoidea and Sphingoidea).
To facilitate the search for species, we divided the butterflies of the Azores into the following 4 groups: 1- Butterflies / 2- Moths I (includes the families Erebidae, Geometridae and Sphingidae) / 3- Moths II (only the family Noctuidae) / 4- Micromoths (divided into 6 subgroups for a total of 23 families).
The front of each Group is between () the number of respective species present in the Azores for a total of 158 species.
